GS1 (TZ) National Ltd board of directors has appointed Ms. Fatma Kange its new Chief Executive Officer.

Ms. Kange becomes the first woman and first CEO at the helm of the company and will be, among other duties, responsible to sensitize business community in Tanzania to make use of the country’s barcode.

Tanzania is a member of GS1, an internationally established organization responsible for the provision of bar codes, traceability services, e-commerce and other trade related issues in the world.

So far, over 370 companies have been registered with GSI (TZ) National Ltd while 6,000 products have barcodes since the company started operating in 2011 August.

The Chairperson of the board, Mr. Elibariki Mmari told journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Ms. Kange was appointed in April 2013.

“The board has appointed her because of her hard work and efficiency,” Mr. Mmari explained the new CEO who was earlier acting.

He said GS1 has a presence in 110 in the world and that Tanzania is a third country in sub Saharan Africa to own her barcode after South Africa and Kenya.

He said every country has her CEO and that a country should report to the rest GS1 members all over the country whenever an appointment of a new leader is made.

He said that the board has considered all regulations and laws before making an appointment and that Ms. Kange will be representing GS1 in various engagements at a local and international level.

On her part, Ms. Kange promised to work hard for the interest of GSI (TZ) National Ltd, business community and country at large.

She said that she will closely work with fellow staffs to make sure that the company’s five year strategic plan is implemented successfully.

“We have a lot to do because barcodes is a bit new concept to many in this country,” she said, adding that their work will greatly help government realize her development objectives.

A member of the board, Mr. Adam Zuku said Tanzania business community should now realize that their country now owns the barcode and that they should make use of it for their benefit and the country.
